Lindsay Lohan is of course a household name. She first made her name as a child star and, working so hard and being forced into the public eye so young, took its toll on her mental health. Much like many of us, Lohan has gone through some tough times when it comes to mental health. Unfortunately, she was forced to face her struggles publicly. This led Lohan to take a break from acting and take some time out for herself. Now, though, at 35, Lohan is returning to acting and is focused on maintaining her mental health.
Lindsay Lohan is prioritizing herself
She’s been living in Dubai for the past few years but now, she’s returning to the US and making a statement. Lohan stars in the Super Bowl commercial for Planet Fitness. It’s a tongue-in-cheek advert that pokes fun at the ‘old’ Lindsay Lohan and her famously fractious relationship with the paparazzi. But though the advert isn’t serious and pokes fun at her history, nowadays, Lohan takes her health and fitness very seriously.
She is also set to star in a Netflix Christmas movie in late 2022. The 35-year-old also revealed late in 2021 that she is engaged, and told Health in a recent interview that she’s prioritizing her mental health.
She relies on a workout routine for physical and mental health
The actress revealed to Health that the most important thing when it comes to her fitness is the routine that goes alongside it.
She works out three or four times a week and enjoys the treadmill most. Lohan explains that for her treadmill workouts, she alternates between speed walking, jogging, and sprinting. She makes sure that whatever the workout on the treadmill, it’s all done on an incline. You definitely don’t have to be sprinting like Lindsay to keep up your health. If all this talk of running seems a bit too much, you can always opt for walking. Walking is just as good for you as running, however, it burns calories at a much slower rate.
Running burns around double the calories that walking does. So, if the goal is to lose weight as quickly as possible, walking may not be the answer. However, having said that, it’s important that you don’t bite off more than you can chew. This is true in relation to almost everything. But with exercise, it’s absolutely vital. You really shouldn’t start running if you’re starting from a place of little or no activity.
It’s likely best to increase your stamina and resilience through walking first. And walking on an incline, as Lohan does, actually burns just as many calories as running. Just make sure that your form is good while you climb those hills. No matter what you do to keep fit, Lohan is right in saying that when you work out, you’re also getting endorphins that make you feel good.
She’s passionate about her mental health
Mental and physical health, Lohan explains to her, are intrinsically linked. Lohan says that she uses her time in the gym as a form of self-care. And she’s right, it’s time that you can get away from the stress of day-to-day life and focus entirely on yourself. Of course, getting moving will also boost your feel-good hormones and is even likely to help you to sleep better which in turn will help to boost your mental health.
Other than physical exercise, Lohan also explained to Health in the same interview that she also relies on meditation. She meditates daily for 10 to 15 minutes and pairs it with breathwork and prayers.
She revealed that she tends to meditate in the bathroom and turns the shower on for the duration of her meditation. This is perhaps not the best for the planet and maybe Lindsay should revert to a Spotify playlist of rain and running water.
If you are looking for another alternative method of meditation, you might want to try out playlists from Spotify or even meditation apps. Sleep apps use everything from colors and images to hypnotic techniques, guided meditations, and even white noise in order to aid relaxation.
The American Sleep Association says that sleep apps can also help retrain your brain and can be useful in cognitive behavioral therapy. This is especially helpful for those of us that can’t afford traditional, in-person therapy.
If you are interested in trying them out, my personal favorites are Headspace and Calm, though I also often make use of sleep playlists on Spotify and even Audible audiobooks.
