These three ground turmeric recipes are a delicious and gluten-free way to start the day.

1. Ground Turmeric & Chia Breakfast Bircher Muesli

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup gluten-free oats
  • 1/4 cup chia seeds
  • 2cm grated fresh turmeric or 1 tbsp (15ml) ground turmeric
  • 1 cup (250ml) almond or soya milk
  • Fresh fruit to serve

Method of preparation:

1. In a bowl, combine oats, chia seeds, fresh fruit or ground turmeric, and almond milk.

2. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

3. Serve in individual portions topped with fresh fruit, such as mango.

2. Asian-style Salmon Kedgeree

This is a breakfast classic with a turmeric twist. (Serves 4)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (250ml) brown basmati and wild rice mix
  • 1 tbsp (15ml) ground turmeric or a 2cm piece grated fresh turmeric
  • 1 stem lemongrass
  • olive oil
  • 6 sprig onions, sliced
  • 1 tbsp (15ml) curry powder
  • 200g poached salmon or smoked salmon ribbons
  • Fresh coriander to garnish
  • A squeeze of lemon juice
  • 3 hard-boiled eggs

Method of preparation:

1. Cook brown basmati and wild rice mix in 2 cups of water, with the ground or fresh turmeric and a stem of lemongrass, crushed.

2. Cook until tender, drain, and rinse.

3. Fry spring onions in olive and curry powder; stir in the rice.

4. Toss through 200g salmon and garnish with fresh coriander, a grind of black pepper, and a good squeeze of lemon juice.

5. Slice in hard-boiled egg quarters.

3. Banana and Turmeric Lassi

Grated fresh turmeric can be added to your favorite smoothie recipes for an added health benefit, or make this lassi, which is a good liver cleanser (serves 2).

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp grated fresh turmeric or 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1 banana
  • 1 cup plain yogurt

Method of preparation:

1. Add all the ingredients to a blender and mix until smooth.

2. Dust with ground turmeric and serve.
