If you’ve ever compared skincare routines with your BFFs, you’ll know that what works for one doesn’t always work for another. Not everybody’s skin structure is the same – and this is what we mean when we’re talking about skin type. Every skin type has different needs, so knowing your skin can help you (finally) create that perfect routine!

Dry Skin Type

If your skin feels dehydrated or tight, it’s quite likely that you have dry skin. It may even look flaky and feel itchy.

Dry skin produces less sebum than normal skin, so it struggles to retain moisture and build a protective shield.

Dry Skincare Routine

  • Start your morning with a hydrating face wash
  • Gently pat your skin dry
  • Immediately apply an ultra-hydrating moisturiser with a protective sunscreen
  • In the evenings, cleanse again with a hydrating wash, pat dry, nourish your skin with a hydrating serum, and finish off with a night cream to help restore your skin from the damage of the day.

Oily Skin Type

If your skin feels greasy and looks super shiny, especially on your nose, cheeks, and forehead, then you might have oily skin.  Oily skin is an over-secretion of sebum, which can cause enlarged pores, blackhead breakouts, and acne.

Oily Skincare Routine

  • Start your morning with a gentle cleanser that removes excess oil without disrupting your skin’s moisture barrier
  • Apply a pore-tightening toner to keep those sebaceous glands under control
  • Moisturize with a lightweight, high SPF moisturiser that’s free of oils
  • In the evenings, cleanse again, tone, and nourish your skin with a lightweight cream that won’t block your pores

Combination Skin Type

If your skin feels tight on the cheeks but greasy on your forehead, nose, and chin (the T-zone), you’re probably a combination skin type.  Combination skin is when you have some areas of dry skin and some areas of oily skin at the same time.

Combination Skincare Routine

  • In the mornings and evenings, use a gentle cleanser that will keep your skin’s moisture barrier in balance, then keep your sebaceous glands under control with a pore-tightening toner
  • Try two different lightweight moisturizers. Use a lighter, oil-free moisturiser on your T-zone, and a more intensive, oil-rich cream on your cheeks. Do this morning and night
  • And don’t forget to wear sunscreen during the day!

Sensitive Skin Type

If your skin feels a little itchy and looks red in places, you might have sensitive skin. Sensitive skin can become upset or inflamed quite easily. It is very reactive towards certain skincare products and is especially vulnerable to sun exposure.

Sensitive Skincare Routine

  • Start your morning with a gentle foaming face wash that also helps to reduce inflammation
  • Gently pat your skin dry
  • Hydrate your skin by softly massaging in a soothing moisturiser that locks in moisture throughout the day and protects your skin with SPF 30, UVA and UVB filters
  • In the evenings, cleanse again with a hydrating wash, pat dry, and nourish your skin with a cream that replenishes and restores your skin barrier while you sleep.
