Yes, 84% of South Africans eat meat every day. However, it appears that more and more South Africans are looking to cut back on their meat consumption. After all, during the lockdown period, vegan orders increased by 71%, making South Africa the country with the most orders on the African continent.

Locally, we’re excited by the continued uptake of vegan orders on the app. What we’ve seen is that South Africans are slowly taking the leap from vegetarianism into veganism, as restaurants are now offering vegan-friendly substitutes for some of their most iconic dishes,” Shane Austin, head of operations at Uber Eats South Africa told Retail Brief Africa.

So, as more and more South Africans shift to a plant-based diet,  Nestlé Professional has set out to meet the demand by releasing Harvest Gourmet™.

Nestlé’s Plant-Based Journey

Now while Nestlé may have a reputation for producing not-so-healthy food, the food manufacturer is focused on improving our eating habits. Since 2017, Nestlé has removed 60 000 tonnes (4.5%) of added sugars and 10 000 tonnes (3.8%) of salt from their products. They’ve also reduced 10% of saturated fat from their products.

Therefore, it’s clear that the brand is focused on listening to consumers and catering to the rising global demand for meat-free alternatives as consumers become more conscious of the health, taste, and environmental effects of their food choices.
