The Best in Aging Review: Future Proof Survey is a comprehensive appraisal of what leading specialists deem to be the best products, treatments, and services available for healthy aging. The survey is completed voluntarily by medical specialists and professionals who review the products and services they use and those they believe Longevity readers need to know about.
This is not an awards project, but a review of what the industry experts who participated deem to be most innovative, cost-effective, and results-driven in their respective categories. In some categories, specialists have chosen not to name a brand, but have instead specified ingredients or therapies. In these instances, we omit any mention of brands.
Each category was evaluated according to the following criteria:
- Proven, consistent delivery;
- Customer satisfaction;
- Value for investment;
- Relevance and appropriateness;
- Innovation;
- Problem-solving abilities; and
- Sustainability as an aging solution
Longevity received over 350 reviews from over 30 industry professionals. Not all comments are listed; quotes have been selected across the survey categories. What’s important to note is that the products and services listed have been approved by the specialists who took part.

An added benefit is that acne, melasma and rosacea are improved, as the gold-plated needles deliver heat, which reduces inflammation and shrinks tiny vessels in the skin. 3. Sculptra

Popular treatments
1. Botulinum Toxin Type A
“Worldwide, it’s the top esthetic, minimally invasive procedure.” – Dr Cobus Van Niekerk
2. Fraxel Laser
“Fraxel Laser targets damaged skin with microscopic laser columns that penetrate deep into the skin. Only a fraction of the skin is treated at a time, leaving surrounding tissue untouched, thereby promoting rapid healing. Fraxel is effective on fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, pigmentation and sun damage.” – Dr Farheen Ghoor
3. Lumecca
“Lumecca offers powerful Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to treat vascular and pigmented lesions. It operates using photo-thermolysis, which provides a photo-facial through the delivery of light treatment. It’s often used as a single-session treatment for sun-exposed skin areas, which most commonly include the face, neck, décolletage, legs, hands and arms. Results have been shown for age spots, sun damage, port wine stains, spider veins, redness and freckles, and skin pigmentation.”

“Lumecca can be used on all areas of the body. However, it’s limited to lighter skin tones, as it may cause hypopigmentation in darker skin. It emits wavelengths of light at a specific range. These are delivered in pulses that resemble flashes of white light. Targets within the skin absorb the light, heat up, and are destroyed due to the thermal energy. The typical Lumecca IPL targets are melanin (causing brown pigmented lesions) and oxyhemoglobin in blood vessels (which appear red). The heat and vibration stimulate natural collagen production, resulting in skin that looks smoother and firmer, with smaller pores. Due to the higher peak power delivered, large spot size and high pulse repetition rate, it allows for fewer treatments.” – Dr Renske van der Walt
Recommended treatments
1. Biostimulators
“The overfilled “pillow-face” look is totally out of fashion. There is now a move towards skin quality with collagen and elastin production, with a more natural firming and strengthening of the skin. There are many biostimulators to choose from, depending on budget and individual patient needs: from mesotherapy solutions to highly concentrated HA injectables (Profhilo), non-HA biostimulators containing calcium hydroxyapatite (eg Radiesse or HArmonyCA), and medical polymers such as Poly-L-Lactic acid and polycaprolactone (eg Ellansé and Sculptra). The non-HA biostimulators are injected in the lateral aspects of the face, such as the temples, pre-auricular area and jawline, thus firming and lifting laterally, and not volumising the mid-face.” – Dr Debbie Norval
2. Microneedling
“Proven, consistent delivery and customer satisfaction.” – Dr Zama Tladi
3. Fillers
“For lifting and sculpting. A treatment in young patients to enhance their feature and to prevent aging. Used in more mature patients to improve sagging and replace lost volume.” – Dr Nicole Kanaris
Treatments for fine lines and wrinkles
1. Botulinum Toxin A
“This is a neurotoxin that binds to nerve endings, preventing the release of a neurotransmitter compound required for that muscle to contract. This, in turn, inhibits muscular contraction, so creases are not formed. An added benefit is that sebum production is also decreased in the treated area. The existing lines are softened even more as the muscle bulk progressively decreases due to non-use, and the habit of frowning is inhibited. Botulinum Toxin A is the primary tool to resolve dynamic wrinkle issues (lines formed due to muscle activity, eg frowning), and will have some effect on static wrinkles (lines visible regardless of muscle action). Injectable neurotoxins will not change crepey or sagging skin. On the face, it’s used on the forehead, between the eyebrows, crow’s feet, upper-lip barcode lines, bunny lines and peach-pip chin dimples. It’s also used on the chewing muscles for teeth grinding and platysmal neck bands (“turkey neck”).” – Dr Renske van der Walt
2. Ablative Fractional Laser Treatments (Pearl Fractional/ Fusion and CO2 Fractional)
“These laser treatments provide full epidermal renewal, improving pigment texture, pore size and fine lines. They also provide fractional ablative treatments for deep wrinkles, acne scars and sun damage – plumping and firming the skin to create a more youthful look. Together, these treatments offer a unique solution for deep and full coverage, with minimum downtime.” – Dr Maureen Allem

“Patients appreciate the quick and desirable results one can achieve with these injectables, for various esthetic and medical indications.” – Dr Herman van Rooyen

2. Thread Lifting
“Threads are a good non-surgical, minimally invasive option for the treatment of facial sagging.” – Dr Nafeesah Wadvalla
3. Mid-Face Volumising Dermal Fillers
“Mid-face volumizing dermal fillers are a great way to address facial sagging, by giving a more lifted, volumized look. Not only will the skin look healthier, but static lines and nasolabial folds will be smoothed out, to give a rejuvenated appearance. The patient will see a noticeable difference immediately after treatment, and will continue to see improvements over the next few weeks, when the hyaluronic acid has really had a chance to work its magic.” – Dr Herman van Rooyen
Treatments for eye bags
1. Lipolytic Injections
“Eye bags are treated with tiny injections of a lipolytic solution containing Fe, vitamin C and lidocaine, which slowly starts dissolving the fat pockets responsible for the eye bag. Four to eight treatments are needed, spaced two weeks apart. The beauty of this treatment is that there is only minor swelling of the treated area, which subsides overnight.” – Maureen Allem
2. Tear Trough Fillers with Hyperdilute Radiesse

LarsZ/Shutterstock
“This treatment uses a blend of Radiesse (recently available in South Africa) with saline to produce the perfect consistency for filling deep tear troughs, without causing Tyndall. The white product color also helps to disguise dark pigmentation that may be present around the eye.” – Dr Anushka Reddy
3. Laser Blepharoplasty with the Alma Harmony iPixel Erbium
“Hanging eyelids or flabby skin around the eyes can be tightened and lifted by means of the Erbium Pixel-laser, a fractionated laser that stimulates fibroblasts to produce new collagen. The technique of this laser treatment is adjusted to the thin skin of the eyelids and around the eyes. As such, eye bags can be fought, dark circles under the eyes are diminished, and overhanging eyelids are lifted, for a natural look with minimum downtime.” – Dr Herman van Rooyen
Treatments for lips
1. Lips Soft by Fillmed
“Lip fillers are injections of hyaluronic acid that add volume and definition to your lips. I like Lips Soft by Fillmed, for a natural, hydrated result, and for definition.” – Dr Nafeesah Wadvalla
Pricing per individual patient
2. Restylane Kysse
“Lips lose volume, color and elasticity with age. Restylane Kysse is a lip filler that adds volume, smooths upper lip lines and enhances lip colour, leaving you with soft, natural-looking, velvety lips.” – Dr Farheen Ghoor
3. Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
“Hyaluronic acid fillers are not only used to create fuller plumper lips, but can also be injected into lips at lower doses, to hydrate lips and also improve the color of the lips.” – Dr Firdaus Ismail
Treatments for stubborn fat pockets
1. Zeltiq Coolsculpting
“Unfortunately, many people are still left with stubborn fat pockets after working hard to get into shape. Coolsculpting is the treatment of choice for love handles, muffin tops, bra bulges, post-baby belly fat aprons, bingo wings, inner/outer thighs, man-boobs, and the fat roll under the buttocks (banana roll). Coolsculpting is the only FDA-approved non-surgical method of removing fat cells through cryolipolysis (killing fat cells by freezing them) and contouring the body. Results have shown up to a 40% (average of 20%) reduction of fat cells in treated areas.” – Dr Renske van der Walt
2. Ceccarelli
“This is a physiological solution containing iron and vitamin C. It causes fat cells to die prematurely (in a process called apoptosis), and the lymphatic system gently removes the fat cells over the course of a few weeks. There is no downtime, apart from a temporary ache at the time of injection. There is no pain, swelling, redness or inflammation, like one gets with deoxycholate and phosphatidylcholine, which work by emulsifying fat cells.” – Dr Debbie Norval
3. Cooltech Cryolipo Fat Freezing
“Cooltech Cryolipo Fat Freezing, often referred to as the safer alternative to liposuction, is a body-contouring treatment. The goal of Cryolipo is to remodel the shape of the body by removing and improving stubborn bulges and pockets of resistant fat. There is no downtime”. – Dr Maureen Allem
Cellulite
1. VelaShape
“This treatment has proved to be effective in smoothing over cellulite, by increasing blood circulation, promoting lymphatic drainage from the tissues, while tightening and firming the skin.” – Dr Anushka Reddy
2. InMode BodyFX
“InMode BodyFX is a non-invasive body-contouring cellulite treatment that uses suction-coupled radio frequency (RF) thermal energy, combined with emission of high-voltage ultra-short-pulse-duration RF to ablate fat cells. The handheld device treats the targeted area by suctioning up a small area of skin and fat. A single RF pulse heats the suctioned area to the required temperature, and thereafter a second RF pulse is sent in to destroy the targeted fat cells.”

“The fat molecules are broken down and the skin is tightened. The body flushes away the broken-down fat tissue over the next weeks. InMode BodyFX improves the appearance of cellulite, dimpled skin and loss of abdominal skin elasticity. It can also be used in problematic stubborn fatty-tissue areas such as love handles, hips, thighs, the neck, arms and knees. Patients may experience some redness, swelling and pain localized to the treatment area for a day or two, with no downtime.” – Dr Renske van der Walt

“Physically breaks the fibrous bands in the skin.” – Dr Cobus van Niekerk
Treatments for unwanted hair
1. CoolGlide Nd:Yag
“It uses long-pulsed Nd:Yag laser technology for safe and effective hair removal for all skin types, including tanned skin.” – Dr Maureen Allem
2. Soprano ICE from Alma
“The diode laser provides a complete and effective semi-permanent laser hair-removal solution. By incorporating multiple laser wavelengths and technologies, Soprano ICE allows practitioners to treat the widest range of patients and hair types all year round, administer treatments quickly and comfortably, and achieve the best possible clinical results.” – Dr Herman van Rooyen
3. Candela GentleMax Pro Laser (Alexandrite 755nm)
“This FDA-approved wavelength-specific laser targets the pigment (melanin) in the hair follicle during its first hair-growth phase. The laser energy destroys the follicle on impact. Alexandrite is scientifically proven to be an effective laser to remove dark hair on light skin tones. This laser also eliminates age spots and brown pigmentation, reduces fine lines and rejuvenates the skin. The Candela range of lasers uses epidermal cooling for maximum comfort and safety. Hair removal usually requires six to eight sessions.” – Dr Debbie Norval
SURGERIES
Innovative surgeries
1. Ergonomic Breast Implant Augmentations
“The use of ergonomic breast implants gives a natural feel and look to breast augmentations.” – Dr Nicolette Landman
2. Arm lift (Brachioplasty)

“Caused by a variety of factors, such as weight fluctuations, genetics and general aging, the appearance of under-arm wings, or sagging skin under the upper arm, is embarrassing for some people. Your plastic surgeon can tighten skin, smooth out supportive tissue, remove excess fat and restore the definition of your upper-arm region by performing a brachioplasty (arm lift). The results of the surgery are almost immediately visible, and will be long-lasting if you follow a healthy lifestyle and maintain your weight.” – Dr Kamlen Pillay
Popular elective surgical procedures
1. Cleft Lip/Cleft Palate/Cleft Nose
“A cleft palate or lip occurs very early in a child’s prenatal development, and is a birth condition that can, luckily, be treated, providing children with the opportunity to lead a normal life. The exact reasons for these conditions are unknown, but they’re not as uncommon as one would think. A cleft, or gap, in the child’s palate is due to the tissue in the roof not joining completely, while a cleft lip is a physical separation, leaving an opening or gap in the upper lip. In some cases, this extends to the nose, causing what is known as a cleft nose, where the displacement of cartilage can appear as a flattening nose.”
“Through important and intricate surgery, an experienced plastic surgeon will reconnect the muscles around the mouth for a cleft lip, and carefully reposition the tissue and muscles around the palate cleft to rebuild the roof of the mouth. Cases of a cleft nose are a bit more specialized, and one should trust a surgeon with cleft rhinoplasty experience for optimum results. In extreme cases, more than one surgery would be required, and in many cases, it may be difficult to complete these until growth has finished. This surgery, however, is worth it, if you consider how a repaired cleft, lip or nose can help your child to lead a happy and healthy life.”– Dr Kamlen Pillay
2. Breast Augmentations
“Boosting confidence and femininity.” – Dr Nicolette Landman
Recommended elective surgical procedures
1. Abdominoplasty
“Returning and improving your pre-pregnancy figure.” – Dr Nicolette Landman
2. Gynecomastia
“Male breast-reduction surgery is currently the most effective way to treat gynecomastia. Sometimes weight loss in itself is not enough, due to an accompanying increase in glandular tissues and excess skin. The surgeon could opt for a specialized liposuction procedure to remove fat or, alternatively, where required, could remove tissues surgically through excision. It’s a safe procedure for men of all ages and is also effective in treating puffy nipples.” – Dr Kamlen Pillay
Popular non-invasive treatments
1. Skinboosters
“Skinboosters can improve the quality and hydration of your skin. Botox – for that rested, vacation look.” – Dr Nicolette Landman
2. Emsculpt
“Emsculpt helps patients to build muscle and sculpt their bodies, non-invasively. It can also be used for an entirely non-invasive buttock-toning treatment. Muscles shape the body, and Emsculpt may thus speed up the fitness journeys of your patients and help them to reach their body goals.”
“Emsculpt is based on HIFEM, high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy. A single Emsculpt session causes thousands of powerful muscle contractions, which are extremely important in improving the tone and strength of the muscles. These induced muscle contractions are very intense, and the muscle tissue is thus forced to adapt to such extreme conditions. The muscle tissue responds by deep remodeling of its inner structure, which results in muscle-building and body-sculpting.” – Dr Kamlen Pillay

Dental products
1. Colgate Dental Tape
“Colgate Dental Tape doesn’t fray like regular floss, and it’s coated with fluoride, to reduce cavity formation between your teeth.” – Dr Melisha Moodley
2. Aquaflosser
“To clean between your teeth when flossing is tricky. It’s great for patients with bridges, implants and braces.” – Dr Zak Schabort
3. Kindbrush Bamboo Toothbrush
“A pretty bamboo toothbrush, designed with a small head to clean hard-to-reach areas, and a flat bottom to stand its ground.” – Dr Riaz Wadvalla
Innovative dental procedures
1. 3D-Digital X-Ray (CBCT Imaging)
“In 2022 in my practise, 3D-digital X-ray (CBCT imaging) has been a game-changer for endodontic (root-canal) treatment and implant placement. It allows me to serve and benefit my patients in more innovative ways, by offering more state-of-the-art dental technologies.” – Dr Riaz Wadvall
2. Artificial Intelligence
“AI not only allows practitioners to improve diagnostics, but it’s also used in modern orthodontics and in computerized dentistry. As the field of AI is expanding rapidly, more and more practises are incorporating these technologies. Most practises do not charge extra for the use of AI.” – Dr Zak Schabort
3. Dental Lasers
“Specialized lasers are used to perform multiple dental procedures with less discomfort and in a more efficient way. These lasers can be used to whiten teeth, for gum contouring, tooth decay removal, and to promote healing after dental surgery.” – Dr Melisha Moodley
Procedures for chipped or broken teeth
1. 3D Zirconia Veneers
“The 3D Zirconia has a much more natural outcome than the Zirconia previously. Porcelain, ceramic or 3D Zirconia veneers are the best long-term solution, as they’re durable and also stain-resistant.” – Dr Zak Schabort
2. Crowns
“Minor tooth fracture: A dental practitioner can repair these fractures with filling materials. In most cases, a tooth-colored filling material is used to make the repaired area look as natural and esthetically pleasing as possible.”
“Moderate fracture: If a large portion of tooth structure has been lost or damaged, a dental crown would need to be placed over the tooth. Dental crowns are used to protect the remaining tooth structure and take the pressure of biting forces. A post/special pin may also be placed into the tooth to provide extra support.”
“Severe fracture: A complete fracture of the tooth, where no other dental procedures can be performed successfully, would result in the extraction of the tooth from the jaw.” – Dr Melisha Moodley
Teeth whitening
1. Zoom Teeth Whitening by Philips
“My favorite teeth-whitening method is Zoom Teeth Whitening by Philips. Best results are achieved when a dental professional performs an in-chair/in-clinic Zoom Whitening procedure, followed by customized bleaching trays for home use, to maintain the whitening results.” – Dr Riaz Wadvalla
2. In-chair Light-Activated Tooth Whitening
“Hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide is applied to the teeth, and an LED light is used from a chair-side lamp. The LED light heats up the gel, speeding up the chemical reaction that whitens teeth and removes stains. Take-home trays are provided for at-home maintenance.” – Dr Melisha Moodley
