As Buddha once said, “What you think, you become”. For Václav Tomanec, this approach is exactly how he went from being an UberEats driver to a millionaire within two years. Now leading the largest personal development community in the Czech Republic, we chatted to Václav on #WednesdayWellness about how a powerful mindset, heart state, and daily practice are the keys to unlocking your potential.

A Change In Mindset

Four years ago, Václav Tomanec was living a typically ordinary life. He was studying at university and, what would be his last form of employment, delivering food for UberEats. However, he couldn’t ignore the growing desire to become an entrepreneur and start his own company, yet he kept postponing it, believing that he would address those goals once he had completed his degree.

That said, limited orders were coming in one day, so Tomanec spent the time chatting with other delivery guys. He realized that they were much older and seemingly unhappy with their current circumstance,

“I made a strong decision that this is not how I want to live and I want to create a better life for myself, and I did so from that point onwards.”

Tomanec reveals that this was easier to do, and he had no issues with procrastination as he understood the need to make a change, which is exactly what he coaches people from all over the world,

“I believe when you have the right mindset, it can flow and you can create whatever life you want.”

Tomanec adds that a decision is made when we support it with action, and at that moment, he laid out activities that he would do daily to help him get to the goal he wants to achieve first.

Goal setting

Without a goal, we have no direction and so it’s imperative to set a goal, and that’s exactly what Tomanec did, setting a goal of what he wanted to achieve. The, the second thing was asking himself exactly why he wanted to achieve those goals,“What separates the winners from losers is the why. Why you’re not going to give up”

With that, Tomanec then delved into which actions he could adopt daily that would help him achieve his goal of entrepreneurship.

It starts with action

The first action would be writing or recording videos for potential clients, which led to Tomanec starting a marketing agency, that would become his first business.

The second action required Tomanec to improve his English, and this was accomplished by him studying an hour to two a day, with an emphasis on sales and communication.

The third, and seemingly most important activity, was a focus on meditation and visualization, as Tomanec believed that visualizing the goal as already achieved increased the chances of him actually achieving said goal.

“It doesn’t matter what your goal is, as long as you understand what you want,  why you really want it and then have three daily activities that you can do, then you will get you to your desired destination.”

Mindful meditation

If you’re curious about changing your mindset using mediation, you may have preconceived ideas about it. If so, Tomanec recommends that you approach mediation with a ‘beginners mind’,

“Forget everything about meditation, forget your experience when it didn’t work for you.” Tomanec adds that it’s best to have clear expectations as many think meditation is about closing their eyes, focusing on their breathing and having no thoughts. Unfortunately, this approach leaves their minds wandering after five seconds, and they conclude that meditation is not for them, or it’s simply too difficult to attempt.

For Tomanec, meditation is about getting distracted and returning,

“It doesn’t matter if you last three seconds at the beginning, but with practice you will get better at it. We focus on our breath, and we get distracted. Notice it, and bring it back and every time we bring it back, that’s meditation. The first week you last five seconds before getting distracted, and the next week, it’s twenty seconds.”

Eventually you start getting better at it, with Tomanec likening it to going to the gym – you start small and incrementally get better. As for when the best time to meditate is, Tomanec recommends it in the morning because it calms down and silences our inner critic,

“I recommend in the morning, outside of bed because we connect bed to sleep. You can ideally put meditation music on or even guided meditation. I recommend 15 minutes a day – That’s the sweet spot. I meditate more but I tell my students 15 minutes. It’s should be a routine, like brushing your teeth.”

For Tomanec, meditation is gym for the mind and when we talk about the benefits, we get better at focusing on one thing and not running from our problems, “If we cut some Instagram time, TikTok time, Pinterest time, and email time, we will find the time to do it.”

Practice gratitude

Another aspect in changing your mindset would be practicing gratitude,

“Why not magnify and focus on the good and feel grateful, and minimize the focus we put on the bad things we experience?”

A biohacking mindest

“I went into biohacking to optimize performance and to get more out of life.”

With biohacking, Tomanec believes that he can increase the quality of his life, whether it’s the length or just his daily energy. However, he feels that biohacking can feel like a full-time job, as he would have a 67-step plan. As such, he tries to reap the benefits for the least amount of time.

In addition to mediation, Tomanec also believes in cold exposure, which is why he’ll opt for an ice bath or a bath that can be set to 4 degrees Celsius, “It takes three minutes a day and I get loads of benefits.”

Then, in the evenings, Tomanec use blue-light blocking glasses and blackout curtains,

“I’m always looking for things that don’t take much time so anybody can apply them.”

Lastly, Tomanec is also a fan of fasting, until 12pm and eating until 6-pm,

“I believe in fasting. I’m more sharp and more focused. I’m not distracted. My body doesn’t waste energy digesting.”

Tomanec is also a fan of fitness, routinely doing strength training, cardio like running and even simple five-minute stretches.

Regarding his drink of choice, Tomanec enjoys celery juice, and he also occasionally indulges in alcohol. However, he’s aware that there is no benefit to drinking a 3rd glass because frankly, he won’t remember it,

“For me, it’s about finding balance. There is no point in drinking over certain points.”

Seven-day darkness retreat

“Every year I want to do something mentally challenging, and so I decided to do a seven-day darkness retreat.”

Having never been offline for more than a day, Tomanec set out to do so for seven days. Throughout the seven days, Tomanec spent time in a room that included a shower and bed but had been specifically designed to be so dark that you can’t see your hand,

“I wanted to self-reflect and understand what’s next for me and to see how my body would react to it. I started to self-reflect and even made notes in darkness – a whole book of notes.”

Tomanec reveals that the experience was 100% life-changing because on day three/four, he felt connected and saw completely new ideas.

What We Think, We Are

Echoing Buddha’s thoughts, Tomanec states that our beliefs ultimately become true. He believes that we can create any life we want, regardless of our circumstances,

“If we want a different life, we need to change ourselves. I didn’t wake up to millions. Rather, I was in an average position and I made changes. As such, I believe that I am the creator of my life and I first created that in my mind.”
