Health and wellness is an industry that has been expanding over the years. This has seen the implementation of alternative therapies grow in popularity. One of these methods is biohacking. On this week’s Wellness Wednesday, we spoke to Mark de Gouveia, the founder of ThriveLabs, Africa’s first biohacking facility.

What Is Biohacking?

Biohacking is a do-it-yourself form of human enhancement or augmentation. It is usually opted for by people who wish to go beyond traditional medicine to address health concerns. Explaining it as a way of putting your health in your own hands, Mark aims to provide alternatives to traditional medicine.

Specializing in the health and wellness industry for over 17 years, Mark aims to provide a “disease-free, periodic and chronic medication-free life”, through the use of alternative practices, specifically, biohacking.

The Importance of Accessibility

Mark’s aim with ThriveLabs is to make biohacking accessible to as many people as possible. By prioritizing accessibility, his aim is to provide treatment that is not only effective for your body, but also cost-effective.

ThriveLabs provides a wide range of treatments to suit everyone’s body needs. From red light therapy (which promotes wound healing and improved skin complexion) and ozone therapy (helps treat diabetes and cancer), to Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, a hot topic in healthcare.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Mark explains Hyperbaric oxygen therapy to us. This exposure to 100% pure oxygen can be highly beneficial for our health. He shares that consistency is very important, citing how 20 mild sessions can increase stem cell reproduction by 300%, and mitochondrial function by 200%. Increasing oxygen saturation in the body can yield various benefits. These include improved blood circulation and collagen production.

One Size Doesn’t Fit All

Healthcare is individual driven, and ThriveLabs understands this. Mark emphasizes the importance of doing the research before your treatment. This research needs to take your individual health restrictions and needs into account, ensuring that you know what precautions need to be taken before treatment.

Is It Suitable For Those With Underlying Conditions?

If you have underlying conditions, you may be a bit worried about these treatments. Mark explains that the therapies cater to the majority of underlying conditions. In addition he consults with doctors and mentors to establish any therapies you would need to implement or change prior to your session. This helps ensure that you do not experience any adverse reactions and puts your life in danger.

His Martial Arts School

However, this isn’t his only health and wellness venture. Mark is also the founder of Capoeira Valente Martial Arts School. As an initiative that is close to his heart, the aim is to work with confidence and humility and help people get comfortable with discomfort. He explains what inspired him to start this venture, and how it’s way more than just “dance-fighting”.
