The 2022 Met Gala is where hundreds of famous people get together, wearing over-the-top looks in order to raise funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. I’ll admit that I was left grossly underwhelmed by the array of looks that the celebrities provided. However, there was something that definitely caught my eye.
Exactly 60 years after Marilyn Monroe serenaded John F Kennedy with her own rendition of Happy Birthday wearing a shimmery, nude, curve-clinging gown, laced with 6,000 hand-sewn crystals that gave the illusion that Marilyn was wearing nothing but jewels, Kim Kardashian wore the very same dress, which is valued at over $10 million to the Met.
Yes, that was enough to garner attention. Yet, what really piqued my curiosity was how she fit into the dress, especially when by today’s standards, Marilyn Monroe wasn’t as curvy.
“I always thought [Marilyn Monroe] was extremely curvy,” Kim told Vogue.
”I imagined I might be smaller in some places where she was bigger and bigger in places where she was smaller. So when it didn’t fit me I wanted to cry because it can’t be altered at all.”
So, what was there for Kim to do? Find another outfit that fit better? No, definitely can’t do that. Instead, Kardashian decided to adopt a rigorous diet and exercise plan that would have her drop 16 pounds in three weeks. Funnily enough, even after doing so, the dress still didn’t fit over her famous derriere so she was forced to wear a white jersey with the dress so that nobody would notice.
“I would wear a sauna suit twice a day, run on the treadmill, completely cut out all sugar and all carbs, and just eat the cleanest veggies and protein.
I didn’t starve myself, but I was so strict.”
Yes, she accomplished her goal, but at what cost to her health?
Kim Kardashian’s Met Gala Diet Is Not Healthy
You might think that Kardashian’s approach was healthy. However, it’s important to remember that she admitted to losing 16 pounds in three weeks. Losing that much weight in such a short amount of time is never a good thing.
1. It affects your metabolism

Yes, a fast metabolism can help you manage your weight better but a crash diet like Kim Kardashian’s met gala one can actually slow down your metabolism. Slow metabolism not only makes weight management harder, but it can also lead to muscle loss, chronic fatigue and even hair loss.
2. It affects your immune system
As Kim mentioned, she removed certain food groups from her diet, which is very common with crash dieting. Unfortunately, this approach can increase the likelihood of you depriving yourself of essential nutrients that your immune system will need to function.
3. It can harm your heart
According to research from the European Society of Cardiology, crash diets can cause a temporary deterioration in heart function.
Considering the fact that heart-related issues continue to be the leading cause of deaths worldwide, perhaps you want to avoid diets that can affect your heart’s functionality?

4. It can affect your skin and hair
As mentioned, crash diets can increase the risk of nutrient deficiency and your hair and skin need nutrients to look as good as they do.
Nutrients like vitamins A, C, and E as well as zinc and biotin are found in a number of foods and these nutrients are essential when it comes to maintaining the health of your skin and your hair.
Therefore, if you’re following a crash diet, you’re running the risk of depriving your hair and skin of these nutrients.
5. Increases risk of disordered eating
According to research, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a spike in disordered eating. One of the contributing factors behind this uptake? The amount of time we spent on social media during the lockdown period. Thanks to routine posts from the likes of Kim Kardashian herself, individuals began to form skewed relationships with their bodies.
Yes, it’s not exactly fair to place that burden on Kim Kardashian’s shoulders. However, the reality is that the reality TV star has a huge platform. The nonchalant way she happily admitted to losing 16 pounds in three weeks is dangerous, especially when 9% of the world population already grapples with disordered eating. What’s more, these same individuals don’t necessarily have the ease of access to health care professionals that Kim Kardashian does.

6. Diets like Kim’s Met Gala One Are Just Not Sustainable
Yes, Kim lost the weight for the dress, but chances are that she’s already regained the weight. In fact, after the Met Gala, she posted a video on her Instagram Story of a huge pizza spread, surrounded by doughnuts in her hotel room.
The reality is that crash diets like the one Kim adopted are simply not sustainable. This is because the faster the weight comes off, the faster it comes back on.
If you’re really looking for sustainable weight loss, then this can only be done by adopting healthy habits. These include getting enough exercise, sleeping well, and managing your stress levels. We also recommend following a balanced diet that includes protein, plenty of fruits and vegetables, grains and healthy fats.
FYI: Your body needs carbs
Yes, you read that right – carbs are not the enemy. In fact, your body needs carbs for energy. What’s more, foods high in carbs, like bananas, quinoa, oats, and sweet potatoes have plenty of benefits for the body.
Yes, Kim Kardashian said that she removed carbs from her diet. However, considering the fact that she admitted to eating vegetables in the same sentence, the chances of her diet being completely carb-free are very, very low. Chances are that she was likely referring to processed carbs such as white bread, pizza dough, pasta, pastries, white flour, and white rice, and even we can’t fault her for removing these foods from her diet – just do it slowly.
