What is Zeolite?
Zeolite is essentially a mineral that forms when volcanic lava and water make contact. This is, needless to say, not a short process. Many scientists believe that the first zeolite was formed over 300 million years ago. The word zeolite comes from Axel Cronstedt who merged two greek words; zéō (boiling) and líthos (stone). Originally, ancient Romans used it to build bridges. In the years since, scientists have established that it can also be useful for its detoxifying and healing properties. Essentially, zeolite keeps the good stuff in and kicks the bad stuff out. It’s also worth mentioning that if you live in Australia, zeolite might also be known as ‘clinoptilolite’. Admittedly, this word is seemingly unpronounceable. However, phonetically it’s pronounced clinop-tilo-lite (if that helps).
How can it help?
Zeolite is best known for its detox properties but doctors also use it for skin (it can be found in anti-aging cosmetics) and bone tissue engineering, wound treatment, bleeding control, and even controlled drug delivery. Essentially, zeolite detoxifies by binding to and then removing waste from the body. It can remove toxins from “the human body, drinking water, and waste materials”. Additionally, it can also remove heavy metals, natural and/or chemical poisons, and even radioactive elements. The real benefit? It doesn’t need to be absorbed into the body.
Amazingly, zeolite can also benefit brain health. Brain cells are very sensitive to heavy metal poisoning. This damage to neutrons can trigger “anxiety, depression, anger, and [even] attention problems”. That said, studies have yet to reveal the direct impact of zeolite on mood. That said, it is clear that its ability to detox heavy metals is beneficial.
It also lowers alcohol absorption when combined with a drink. The blood-alcohol level of 12 sample drinkers was lowered by up to 43%. Another clinical trial also saw zeolite help with hangover symptoms the morning after a heavy night out. In 25 volunteers, hangover symptoms were relieved by 40-50%. Obviously, it’s ideal to keep your alcohol intake low. But this might be a good answer to a little bit of alcohol-related overindulgence over the upcoming festive season.
Why do I need it?
No matter how hard we may try to avoid it, our skin and bodies are exposed to pollution and harmful chemicals daily. Even on the skin surface, zeolite has great benefits. It can absorb, hold, and then release toxins and chemicals. This successfully removes all the bad stuff like pollution and dirt. It then leaves behind all the good stuff like nutrients and oils.
How can I use it?
The Real Thing recommends taking its zeolite powder as follows:
- Orally: For detox, take 1 teaspoon (5g) daily, mixed with water or a cold drink of your choice, for at least 30 days. For acute conditions, take 1 teaspoon three times daily, or consult your health practitioner. Mix well and drink quickly.
- As a face mask: Mix 1 to 2 tablespoons of The Real Thing Zeolite with a little water to make a paste. Before the paste dries, apply evenly over the face (as well as the neck and chest if desired). After 10 minutes, rinse with water and mild soap. Use it once every two weeks. If your skin feels dry after application, apply a moisturizer. If irritation occurs, suspend use and consult your health practitioner.
It’s always ideal to use pure zeolite powder. It doesn’t have any added “wheat, gluten, dairy. binders, fillers, preservatives or additives of any kind”. After all, you want to know exactly what you are putting into your body. This could be highly beneficial, especially over the holiday season, so why not give it a go?
