March 28th, 2022. Each week we choose the three stories about the climate crisis, published online, we think you should read. After all, Longevity is not only about promoting personal health. Without a healthy planet, it is clear we will not be able to enjoy our good health and longevity. A healthy planet equals healthy people.
Monday news briefs highlighting the climate crisis
1. From Antarctica
This has alarmed scientists the world over.
Weather stations in Antarctica shattered records Friday as the region neared autumn. The two-mile high (3,234 meters) Concordia station was at 10 degrees (-12.2 degrees Celsius), which is about 70 degrees warmer than average, while the even higher Vostok station hit a shade above 0 degrees (-17.7 degrees Celsius), beating its all-time record by about 27 degrees (15 degrees Celsius), according to a tweet from the extreme weather record tracker Maximiliano Herrera.

2. From the World Inequality Lab
“The richest 1%— the more than 60 million people earning $109,000 a year—are by far the fastest-growing source of emissions. They live all over the world, with about 37% in the U.S. and more than 4.5% each in Brazil and China.” – Bloomberg
A Bloomberg article explained how analysts from the World Inequality Lab, led by the Paris School of Economics and the University of California at Berkeley, recently put forward an alternative assessment of the climate crisis. The scientists focused more on varying measures of consumer income than gross domestic product.
“Personal wealth does more than national wealth to explain the sources of emissions.” Bloomberg
“After a generation of poorly distributed gains from globalization, it turns out that personal wealth does more than national wealth to explain the sources of emissions.”
“Climate progress means first curbing the carbon output of the wealthier among us.”

3. From Australia
According to CNN, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is suffering its sixth mass bleaching. Reef managers in Australia say this is due to heat stress caused by climate change.
“Coral bleaching events tend to happen when water temperatures are much warmer than normal. But this bleaching event comes despite La Niña, which is characterized by cooler-than-normal temperatures across the equatorial Pacific Ocean.”
The update comes mid-way through a 10-day monitoring mission by UNESCO scientists. They are considering whether to add one of the world’s seven natural wonders to their “in danger” list.
“More than half of the living coral cover that we can see from the air is severely bleached completely white and can have signs of fluorescence in the colors of pink, yellow and blue,” said AIMS coral biologist Neal Cantin.
