When you have a horse, you want it to be healthy, am I right? The moment you see it rolling or attempting to roll on the ground while looking as if it is in agony, you know that its health is impaired. In fact, it was probably impaired much sooner than you noticed. However, the point is that you need to act and do that quickly in order to help your animal.
Imagining this situation is already stressful, let alone finding yourself in the middle of it. What I have described above is only one symptom of something known as colic in horses. I might have not termed that right, since colic is the symptom of something else, and I’ll explain that in a bit. Click here to learn more about it.
What is colic?
As a symptom, colic holds a lot of power in its court. In fact, it is known to be one of the most common causes of death in horses. This term is used to describe abdominal pain and that pain is usually caused by one of many underlying issues with the animal’s gastrointestinal tract. These issues can either be mild or not that serious or severe and life-threatening.
Since you don’t want to risk it, the best thing to do when you notice this symptom is to immediately contact a veterinarian. I have some good news for you, though. No matter how unusual that might sound, colic has its own symptoms. If you are observant enough, you can notice them and act on time in order to use one of the home remedies to help your animal.
What are its symptoms?
As I have already mentioned, there are milder cases and then there are severe cases of this issue. The symptoms of the milder cases include lip curling, pawing the ground, as well as restlessness. If things are more serious than that, you can notice your horse lying on its side for long periods of time or lying down and standing up frequently.
There are some more signs you should look out for, however things can get even worse than that. If you notice your equine breathing heavily, sweating and rolling on the floor as already described above, you should immediately contact an expert. A veterinarian will be able to tell you exactly what to do in a situation like this.
What home remedies can you use?
In addition to contacting a veterinarian, there is something you can do all by yourself with the aim of helping your horse, especially if the symptoms are not that severe I’m talking about using home remedies to alleviate those symptoms and help the animal feel better. Some of those home remedies can even cure rather severe symptoms.
Chamomile is first on the list of remedies you should try. I suppose there’s no need for me to explain why, but let me do it anyway. Chamomile comes with soothing, as well as anti-inflammatory properties. That means that it can calm the digestive tract of your animal and reduce the pain that’s causing it trouble.
Speaking of the digestive tract, peppermint is another important remedy that you should know of. It is practically famous for its ability to help during the digestive process. Since digestive issues are what causes colic, peppermint will play a huge part in successfully solving those issues.
CBD Oil
One product, in particular, has been grabbing a lot of attention when horse colic is in question and if you take a quick look on the Holistapet website, you’ll get acquainted with that product. It is called CBD oil and it is made from the cannabis plant known as hemp. Even though it’s related to cannabis, it’s not psychoactive, so you can rest assured that you won’t be harming your equine by administering this product.
Now, you are probably curious as to what CBD oil has to do with colic in the first place. Here’s the explanation. CBD oil also has anti-inflammatory effects, but it is also known for targeting pain specifically and getting rid of it. This product is used in the process of treating any kind of gastrointestinal issue. This then means that it is perfect for colic no matter what it is caused by.
