Getting older brings all sorts of changes that one must adapt to. Unfortunately, loose skin is one of those things. However, Demi Moore and Kelly Ripa have recently shared how they can relate to this and expressed their struggles in adapting to one of life’s many changes.

Demi Moore and Kelly Ripa on Aging with Loose Skin

Speaking on Kelly Ripa’s podcast, Let’s Talk Off Camera, Demi Moore and Kelly Ripa both shared their experiences with having loose skin. As we age, our skin loses its elasticity, and this is something that both actresses can relate to completely.

According to Prevention, Moore, 61, opened up about struggling to accept the lack of skin elasticity, expressing, “Skin is going, and having its own program,” she joked.

“I have a friend who used to say, ‘Oh, this loose skin,’ and of course my arrogance was like, ‘Yeah….’ I had no connection to it. Now it’s hitting me of what she was talking about.”

Ripa, 53, echoed Moore’s comments, adding, “I try never to turn around and look in the mirror—ever—if I’m naked.” she quipped.

So, what causes loose skin?

According to Healthline, aging triggers changes in skin texture and firmness in the arms, stomach, face, and neck area. These changes are mostly caused by a lack of collagen production and loss of elastin. This then results in the skin thinning out and sagging.

Preventing loose skin

While we can’t prevent aging, there are a few ways habits to adopt to help prevent loose skin.

  1. Exercise: Exercise is a great anti-aging trick, especially because it can combat the effects of skin aging, and even encourage the production of collagen.
  2. A healthy diet: You are what you eat, and if you want to maintain skin elasticity, then you need to stay clear of alcohol, and processed and fried foods. Rather, it would be best to indulge in foods that encourage the production of both collagen and elastin, such as green leafy vegetables, bone broth, fatty fish, fruits, and nuts.
  3. Better sun habits: While the sun is a great source of vitamin D, it can also affect our skin’s production of collagen and elastin. Thus, it’s important to practice better sun habits that include wearing a broad-spectrum SPF50 sunscreen, and investing in wide-brimmed hats and long-sleeved clothing.
  4. Quit smoking: Smoking and other pollutants can release toxins that affect skin elasticity – which is why so many smokers look way beyond their years. If you’re looking to quit the habit, here’s an easy guide.
  5. Aesthetic procedures: If you’re looking for a more clinical solution to loose skin, then there exists plenty of procedures (both non-invasive and invasive) that can help address the issue of loose skin. These include ultrasound therapy, radiofrequency. and various forms of laser and light therapies.

The bottom line

Aging is inevitable, and it happens to everyone, even celebrities. Yet, you can still take the necessary precautions to ensure proper health and wellness, for both you and your skin.

“Women in their 50s and 60s and 70s are now keeping themselves—thanks to diet, exercise, fitness routines, modern medicine—women are much younger, they look younger, they feel younger, they have the vitality of a much younger person.” – Kelly Ripa
