TikTok has sparked countless beauty and skincare trends, many more for clicks than credibility. One recent trend gaining attention is the so-called “Caveman skincare method”, popularized by a TikTok user. Is this extreme approach really the secret to healthy, glowing skin?

What is the Caveman skincare method?

This method involves abstaining from all skincare products: no cleanser, no moisturiser, no water to let the skin’s barrier repair itself without interference. While this hands-off approach might sound appealing due to its simplicity, I urge you to exercise caution.

Firstly, cleansing your face is an essential step in your skincare routine and should not be skipped. This step allows your skin to repair itself overnight. Without effectively removing the buildup of oil, dirt, sunscreen and makeup on your skin, you run the risk of damaging your skin barrier further.

In the viral video, the TikTok user states that her skin is going through a process called retention hyperkeratosis, which is when the skin holds onto dead cells instead of shedding them. A damaged skin barrier can contribute to retention hyperkeratosis by impairing the skin’s natural exfoliation process and causing cells to stick together and accumulate on the surface of the skin. Additionally, completely abandoning basic hygiene and care might worsen the problem rather than fix it.

What happens when your skin barrier is damaged?

Your skin barrier plays a crucial role in keeping moisture in and irritants out. When it’s compromised, you might experience dryness, tightness, flaking, redness, sensitivity, or breakouts. Some people may also see a flare-up of conditions like eczema or rosacea.

Rather than taking a “do nothing” approach, I recommend a simplified, gentle routine that supports healing without overloading the skin.

How to effectively heal your skin barrier without going full caveman

If you suspect that your skin barrier might be compromised, it’s important to focus on what the effects are, as it will determine your action plan. Is it that your skin struggles to retain moisture and your skin feels dry and tight or are you experiencing acne breakouts, rosacea, and eczema?

If you suspect that your skin barrier might be compromised, start by identifying and removing potential irritants like harsh exfoliants, retinoids, or overly active ingredients.

You don’t have to stop cleansing your face altogether. Instead, opt for a gentle, non-stripping cleanser and build your routine with barrier-supportive ingredients.

It’s not just products that can damage the barrier, but environmental factors like dry air, cold winds, and even diet can play a role. Try to limit high sugar and fat intake and increase fruit and leafy greens. The best way to care for your skin barrier is to take a holistic approach.

Key ingredients for a healthy skin barrier

Ingredients that you should use to strengthen your skin barrier include:

To allow your skin barrier to function at its best, your topical skincare regime must be tailored with ingredients that repair and heal your skin. Even if you’re using the best product available, a damaged skin barrier will always prevent these products from optimally benefiting the skin.

Bottom line

While the Caveman Skincare Method might appeal to minimalists or those overwhelmed by too many products, the key to healthy skin isn’t about doing nothing, it’s about doing the right things. Gentle cleansing, targeted hydration, and avoiding harsh ingredients or environmental stressors will do far more to repair and protect your skin barrier than skipping skincare entirely.
