Naomi Campbell’s Grocery List

The 49-year-old supermodel has had an incredible career. She was the first black British model to appear on the cover of British Vogue in 1987 and the first black model to appear on the cover of French Vogue a year later. She recently celebrated 30 years of working in the industry and became the recipient of the British Fashion Council’s (BFC) 2019 icon award. Not one to rest on her laurels, she launched #BeingNaomi. Her first video of the series has attracted more than a million views. In the vlog, she takes us through her travel essentials and routine. This routine includes using antibacterial wipes on everything she might touch during a flight.

Then it may come as a surprise that such a famous face also likes to do her own grocery shopping. Naomi told Emirates Women that she finds it “therapeutic.” She explains how she had to quit gluten, wheat, and dairy and proceeds to add Japanese pears, lemons, grapes, about eight packs of basil, and essential oils to her trolley. Campbell, who recently quit smoking and drinking, also told viewers, “I need to eat more fruit, not candy.”

And guess what? The list includes, among other healthy food choices, lemons!

Why are lemons on Naomi Campbell’s Grocery List?

Naomi clearly knows a thing or two about lemons. Here, we share 9  healthy tidbits  about lemons,  that if Naomi Campbell’s grocery list hasn’t got you including them in your diet then perhaps this will:

1. Lemons are good for your heart

According to HealthLine lemons are a great source of vitamin C. One lemon provides about 31 mg of vitamin C, which is 51% of the reference daily intake (RDI).  Some research shows that eating fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C reduces your risk of heart disease and stroke.

Other studies have shown that it is not only vitamin C that is thought to be good for your heart. Fiber and plant compounds in lemons could also significantly lower some risk factors for heart disease.

Plant compounds found in lemons — namely hesperidin and diosmin — have also been found to help lower cholesterol.

2. Enhance Concentration

Studies have shown that inhaling lemon oil helps to increase concentration. They can be used as an air freshener in offices to increase productivity or as an essential oil diffused into the air.

3. Helps Reduce Fever

Drinking hot water, honey and lemon juice has been known to bring down a fever. It needs to be repeated every two hours in order to ensure that the condition remains stable.

4. Assist in Antioxidant Absorption

Add a slice of lemon to your green tea. One study found that citrus increases your body’s ability to absorb antioxidants in the tea by about 80%.

5. Haircare

Lemon juice has proven itself in the treatment of hair care. When applied to the scalp, it can treat problems such as dandruff and scaly scalp. If you apply lemon juice directly onto your hair, it will develop a natural shine.

6.  Is vitamin C cancer-fighting?

Just one lemon has more than 100% of your daily intake of vitamin C, which may help to increase “good” HDL cholesterol levels and strengthen bones. But can vitamin C fight cancer?

There seems to be a lot of conflicting information when it comes to cancer and vitamin C. There is some research that shows a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables may help prevent some cancers, but these studies are still not conclusive enough.  Some researchers argue that plant compounds found in lemons — such as limonene and naringenin — could have anticancer effects,

While some plant compounds from lemons and other citrus fruits may have anticancer potential, many scientists believe there is not enough quality evidence to conclude that lemons can fight cancer in humans. Still, the fruit has so many other benefits, it is worth including in your diet.

7. Dental Care

Lemon juice is frequently used in dental care. If fresh lemon juice is applied to the area of a toothache, it can assist in easing the pain. Massaging lemon juice onto the gums can stop bleeding from occurring. Lemon juice can also be used to eliminate bad odors that can come from various gum diseases and conditions.

8. Protection Against Toxins

Ancient Egyptians believed that eating lemons and drinking lemon juice were effective protection against a variety of poisons. Today, lemons are known to have strong antibacterial, antiviral and immune-boosting properties. Lemons contain many substances – notably citric acid, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C, bioflavonoids, pectin, and limonene – that promote immunity and fight infection.

9.  Burns Fat and Prevents Hunger

Naomi Campbell’s grocery list includes lemons for many other reasons than burning fat, which is still an important factor. Well, she has always had a stunning physique, so this would not be a critical issue for her. Foods that are rich in vitamin C are known to help your body burn fat quickly and can prevent hunger. Oranges, grapefruit, lemons, and limes contain properties that help decrease insulin levels, speed up your metabolism and assist with weight loss. Anyway, lemons squeezed in or on almost anything will enhance the flavor – so don’t be shy.

Lemon in warm water aids digestion

Not only does the warm water help to stimulate the GI tract, but the lemons are believed to stimulate and purify the liver. It also helps digestive acids with digestion and elimination.

Supports immune function

Citrus fruits like lemon are high in vitamin C and ascorbic acid. Vitamin C can help fight colds and ascorbic acid helps with iron absorption, which also plays a role in immune function.

Alkalises the body

Even though lemons seem acidic, they are extremely alkalising and a great way to ensure your pH balance is where it should be. This is of particular importance if your diet includes a lot of meat, cheese, and/or alcohol.

Helps detox

Lemon water is a natural diuretic, which means it helps your body flush liquid and toxins along with it. Citric acid can also help maximize enzymes that stimulate the liver.

Keeps skin beautiful

Vitamin C plays a critical role in maintaining healthy skin and the antioxidants can combat aging factors.

Speaking of keeping your skin beautiful, lemons also work wonders for your beauty regime. Follow this link to read how lemon juice can be applied as a skin treatment.
