Break the rules of makeup

When did makeup become so serious? Itโ€™s supposed to be fun and experimental and thatโ€™s something that Mirren very clearly believes in saying,

โ€œI always mix it up and do something different. I apply make-up according to how I feelIf Iโ€™m working with a make-up artist, they will ask what I like and I always tell them that my face is their canvas and to do what they want.

You always find new ideas and ways of looking at yourself that way. We all get stuck in our ruts in the way we make up our eyes, hair, or lips โ€“ itโ€™s good to shake it up.

Love the skin youโ€™re in

In an image-obsessed world, it can be hard to be comfortable in your own skin. This is especially true when youโ€™re in the public eye. Granted, it took some time for the Oscar-winning actress to become comfortable with herself. Thankfully, sheโ€™s never looked back, sharing that now sheโ€™s become so happy with her smile.

โ€œI never smiled. Then I discovered that, actually, itโ€™s nice to smile openly and with freedom, not a tight little smile, a big one. It certainly has served me in good stead.โ€

Embrace the grey

โ€œGoing grey is to be encouraged โ€“ thatโ€™s not to say you canโ€™t have fun with your hair, because itโ€™s a very important part of how you feel about yourself. People should do whatever makes them feel comfortable.โ€

Yes, not everybody is proud of their grey hair, and it’s their prerogative if they want to hide them. But for the BAFTA-winning actress, living life on the grey side is exactly where she wants to be.

Be open to opportunities

According to Mirren, this is the secret to a life well-lived. She adds that you should look at life from a fresh pair of eyes, imaging that youโ€™re seeing the world for the first time. She also adds that you shouldnโ€™t feel paralyzed by your own insecurities and that while you should always be polite, try not to be too apologetic in life.

Diet and exercise are the key to growing older

Diet is incredibly important, especially if you want to live a life as long and healthy as Helen Mirrenโ€™s. She advises that you work from the inside out and while sheโ€™s the first one at the fish and chips, she reminds us that what you putย inside your body does influence how you feel about yourself.

In regards to her fitness routine, Mirren shares that she follows theย Canadian Air Force womenโ€™s exercise regime, which is a 12-minuteย exercise regime that starts easy but becomes difficult over time.ย Mirren admits that ย sheโ€™s ย incredibly lazy and ifย sheย can avoid doing it, sheย will, but every now and then she pulls herselfย back in.
