Promote heart longevity by having more sex – sounds like a good plan to me. Jokes aside, there’s evidence to prove that having a healthy sex life can boost long-term survival hopes for heart attack victims. What’s better is not only can you promote heart longevity, but a healthy sex life can even promote a longer, healthier life generally.

With so much research being done on the subject, it’s becoming clearer that having healthy sex is essential to a healthy life. It helps you live longer. According to Dr. Irwin Goldstein, Director of Sexual Medicine at Alvarado Hospital, considering the research, you can’t conclude anything else but that it’s healthy to have sexual activity. We’re not debating anything here and now that we know it can also promote heart longevity. What’s stopping us?

There are many surprising health benefits that happen from having a healthy and active sex life.

Promote Heart Longevity With More Sex

Sexual Activity Boosts Survival Rates

New studies are showing that those who have experienced heart attacks can boost their chances of long-term survival by returning to normal levels of sexual activity.

Many people stop having sex after a heart attack in the belief that it could trigger another episode. However, research published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology says sex is good for survival rates. Researchers followed 495 couples for around 20 years. They found that those who maintained or increased their frequency of sexual activity in the first six months after a heart attack had a 35% lower risk of death than those who stopped having sex or reduced their frequency. Isn’t that amazing?

Sex Really Does Promote Heart Longevity.

Study author Professor Yariv Gerber of Tel Aviv University in Israel says that sexuality and sexual activity are markers of well-being. Therefore, to promote heart longevity he recommends resuming sexual activity once you are healthy after having a heart attack. The professor believes that it helps to shift our perception into thinking that we are healthy, functioning, young, and energetic. This may lead to a healthier lifestyle generally.
However, sudden physical exertion, like having sex, can trigger a heart attack. The long-term risk of heart problems is reduced by regular physical activity. Gerber also explains that while isolated episodes of sexual activity do show to trigger heart problems, in some cases, people who exercise regularly are at a lower risk.

They Already Had A Heart Attack

The patients that were followed in the study weren’t spring chickens either. Interestingly, they were aged 65 years or under and hospitalized for their first heart attack in 1993. Their average age was 53 and 90% of them were men. Researchers found that after 22 years, 211 patients, or 43% of the total participants, had died.

What They Did

Researchers decided to adjust factors such as obesity, physical activity, and socioeconomic status to determine the difference in risk of death between the two groups. They found that the survival benefit was mainly a reduction in non-cardiovascular mortality like cancer. What does this mean? It means that the people in the group who died had mainly fallen victim to conditions other than heart disease.
Gerber told CNN that people who can climb stairs, jog or walk a mile without difficulty are safe to have sex with again.  CNN also relates to the funny scene in the movie “Something’s Gotta Give.” Heart attack patient Jack Nicholson has to prove he can climb a flight of stairs before he can have sex with Diane Keaton. Therefore, sex really is a great way to promote heart longevity and is why patients should resume sexual activity as soon as possible. Preferably within a few days after being discharged from the hospital.

Go At Your Own Pace

Whilst having a sexually active lifestyle does promote heart longevity. We do not encourage you to go wild before consulting with your doctor. Also, everyone’s case is unique and their frequency of sexual activity is different.

Gerber explains that the severity of a heart attack or complications like heart failure or atrial fibrillation can affect the ideal time frame. This is why individual patients need to consult their doctors first. This study doesn’t examine the ideal frequency of sexual activity. But Gerber says that ‘even a low frequency of less than once a week is associated with better long-term survival compared with no sex at all.’

Recovery Is Quicker

Sex can promote heart longevity, but it also provides a better recovery because it improves your physical fitness. Sex also strengthens the relationship between you and your spouse and builds mental resilience. Having a healthy sex life gives you the ability to ‘bounce back’ from the initial shock of the event within a few months.
It’s common for people to avoid sex when they believe that they’re not healthy enough. Gerber says they’re also less likely to attend cancer screenings and other health checkups. So it’s no surprise that there’s usually hesitation around resuming sexual activity and an increase in cancer mortality. This isn’t good when the goal is to promote heart longevity and long-term health.

There Are Others Factors That Promote Heart Longevity

However, as with any study, there are certain variables that haven’t been considered. It’s obvious that a healthy sex life promotes a healthy life generally.

However, Gerbers does mention that the study looked at relatively young participants and that there weren’t many women involved. This could limit the strength of the findings for older or female patients.

He also underlines that there are many other factors that contribute to heart health and survival rates. The study does not assume that sexual activity is the only factor that influences survival rates. Gerber says that there are many physical and psychosocial health parameters for maintaining regular sexual activity. Therefore, the benefit of sexual activity itself is still quite debatable.
However, the results do show us that we shouldn’t be worried about resuming sexual activity soon after a heart attack. Especially if sex helps to promote heart longevity.
