Hotel group BodyHoliday will enter the European market in 2027 with a €158m five-star wellness retreat in Portugal’s East Algarve. The 220-key resort will feature a 50-treatment-room spa, clubhouse, gym, multiple pools, and direct beach access.  It’s not surprising that Portugal is their choice for their European expansion. The country is highly attractive and accessible. Portugal has experienced significant growth in visitors as well as international residents over the past five years.

BodyHoliday is a luxury wellness brand

BodyHoliday created a resort in St Lucia, Caribbean, that provides an all-inclusive, personalized experience of wellness and discovery where guests enjoy a transformational journey designed as an antidote to the pressures of modern-day life.

This resort is known world-wide for its holistic approach to mind-and-body holidays. It was also one of the first hotels to recognise the needs of single travellers.

Portugal expansion

Wellness tourism globally is booming — and it’s not slowing down anytime soon. The global industry is expected to reach a staggering €1.25 trillion by 2028, with affluent travellers and families increasingly seeking out destinations that offer more than just a pretty view.

They’re after peace of mind, a slower pace, and an overall better quality of life. This is where companies like BodyHoliday step in.

Portugal is popular for mind and body tourism

Portugal’s coastline provides an idyllic setting for those looking to unwind.

BodyHoliday  clearly agrees. The company has announced that it will be expanding into Europe with a five-star health and fitness retreat on Portugal’s East Algarve coastline. The resort is set to open in 2027. The €158 million (US$165.9 million, £131.1 million) BodyHoliday Algarve will be located near the unspoiled beaches of Praia da Lota.

The 220-key resort will be a sister destination to the operator’s flagship in St Lucia and mark BodyHoliday’s first European outpost.

Guests will have access to a 50-treatment-room spa, landscaped gardens, a clubhouse, five dining outlets and a gym designed for Pilates, spinning, and yoga. The retreat will also feature an indoor pool, three outdoor pools and direct beach access.

Visitors will come from key international markets

BodyHoliday has it’s sights set on  visitors from key international markets, including the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany and Italy.

Construction will start already in 2025, with backing from the local municipality of Vila Real de Santo António (VRSA).  The resort will be built to BREEAM standards, and will blend into its natural surroundings with minimal environmental impact

Álvaro Araújo, president of the Municipal Chamber of VRSA, Portugal, told the media that this resort will be a game-changer for the region.

“This project will transform VRSA’s tourism landscape, elevating the quality of our offering and attracting high-end travellers.” –  Álvaro Araújo

The development aims to redefine high-end wellness tourism in the region, blending health-focused hospitality with sustainable luxury.
