Mixing henna is an art in itself. It’s quite similar to cooking. Everybody has a recipe of their own but the ultimate goal is the same; delicious food or in this case, the darkest henna color possible. Mixing henna requires a lot of trial and error. After trying for months to achieve the perfect stain, I have finally landed on the perfect henna recipe for dark color.
They say “practice makes a man perfect”, it’s 100% true in my case. This recipe is a living breathing proof of that. You don’t have to waste a lot of time as I did. Simply follow the instructions and you will not be disappointed.
Ingredients
First things first, let’s start with the ingredients. You will need:
- Water (obviously)
- Lemon Juice
- Sugar
- Pure Henna Powder
- Essential Oil
Why I am Using These Ingredients?
Water
No explanation is needed here. You need water to turn henna powder into a paste whether you plan it to apply to your hair or make cones for creating intricate designs.
Lemon Juice
Lemon juice is highly acidic. Believe it or not, . It results in a darker color and makes your henna lasts much longer. You need to add 2 to 3 drops of lemon juice to water and then create the paste.
Sugar
Sugar makes henna stay wet for long. While it might seem a bit annoying at first, wet henna sticks to your hands well for an extended duration of time, leaving a darker stain. You will no longer need to apply a sealer afterward if you decide to add sugar to your henna paste. Moreover, it helps you achieve a perfect henna consistency; not too runny, not too thick.
Essential Oil
Essential oil is the gold ingredient of the henna recipe for dark color. I recommend going for lavender oil or tea tree oil. Keep in mind that essential oils are highly potent and I wouldn’t recommend going overboard with them. One ounce of essential oil per 100 grams of henna will do the job.
Organic Henna Powder
I cannot stress this enough. Make sure you are purchasing an organic and vegan henna powder. Stay clear of anything that is loaded with metallic dyes and harmful chemicals you cannot even read the names of. My personal favorite is the Organic Henna Powder from The Henna Guys. You can choose the one as per your choice. Just make sure that it’s 100 organic.
