Yes, it may be a bit unlikely that you will experience love at first taste on the very first time you try this tart cross between a orange and a pomelo. However, this superfood should absolutely still be on your grocery shopping list – for a myriad of reasons. Noted, grapefruit can be on the bitter side for those who are used to the sweeter members of the citrus family – such as nectarines or oranges – but it is often more nutritious than its aromatic cousins. Here is why we love grapefruit:

1. It is one of the best foods for sustainable weight loss.

Because the grapefruit is very low in calories, while having a very high water content of about 92%, it will increase your satiety without risking weight gain. Additionally, its low GI will keep hunger at bay.

According to Harvard Medical School, grapefruit has a glycemic index of 25, meaning that it won’t spike your blood sugar levels. On top of that, studies of animals have shown that eating grapefruit can be more effective than anti-obesity drugs.

2. Reduction of cellulite

Because it contains the powerful enzyme bromelain, which has been shown to be effective in breaking down cellulite, grapefruit can act as a natural treatment for dimples. Its high levels of anti-inflammatory and other skin-cleansing agents also enhance its powers in this regard.

3. It is really high in vitamin C

Half of a grapefruit contains at least half of the typical vitamin C requirements for the average adult, and various elements of your health will benefit consequently. First, an increase of vitamin C in your diet will benefit your skin, as this is important in the formation of collagen. And second, your immunity will improve, because the cells of your immune system function at their best when they get enough vitamin C on a regular basis.

4. Eating grapefruit is good for your heart

The American Heart Association states that women could possibly reduce their risk for ischemic stroke by increasing their flavonoids, which can be found in certain citrus fruits, one of which happens to be grapefruit. Also containing choline, potassium, lycopene and fibre, this fruit is nutritionally fantastic in maintaining a healthy heart.

How to add them to your diet

This is where the fun part comes in. Now that you know why you should add these super-fruits to your grocery cart, make sure you go for the ones that are either red or pink. These grapefruits boast higher antioxidant levels, containing both lycopene and beta carotene.

  • Have them for breakfast with some Bulgarian yoghurt and a quick drizzle of raw honey. Top it off with a few crushed mint leaves. 
  • Add grapefruit to your salad for a flavorsome nutrient boost. 
  • Pair them with protein and some healthy fats, such as walnuts or almonds. 
  • Eat them whole instead of juicing them. This way, you don’t lose out on fibre and nutrients, and your blood sugar won’t spike.
  • Eat a bitter pith. This contains vast amounts of fibre, antioxidants and nutrients, so even if it is bitter, you don’t want to throw it away.
